Southeastern Cowboy Gathering Returns to Booth Museum March 11-14

     The Booth Western Art Museum hosts the 7th Annual Southeastern Cowboy Gathering March 11-14 in Cartersville.  Featured artist Nelson Boren opens the event on Thursday with a reception and presentation.  A Friday evening concert in the new Booth Ballroom features Sweethearts in Carhartts, a trio of Jean Prescott, Yvonne Hollenbeck and Liz Masterson.  Participants will go head to head in contests of chuck wagon and Dutch oven cooking, and mandolin, fiddle, guitar and banjo picking, while guests enjoy good eats and great music.  Don’t miss the Saturday evening concert with famed Western singer, songwriter, poet and guitarist Red Steagall at the Grand Theatre.  The celebration of the West continues Sunday with Cowboy Church, children’s activities and more.  Many activities are included with paid museum admission; concert tickets are on sale now.  Call 770-387-1300 or see http://www.BoothMuseum.org.

Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum Hosts Senior Scholars Programs

     The Senior Scholars Program is returning to Oak Hill and The Martha Berry Museum beginning March 2 with a whole new slate of classes designed to challenge and enrich the lives of senior citizens.  Classes will be held every Tuesday through April 20.  Registration is $60 for one class, $160 for three classes and $200 for four.  Some classes require and additional fee.  Class topics for spring include: Cooking Appetizers, Intermediate Drawing and Painting, Computers, Civil War & Reconstruction, Book Discussion The Help, Local History, Oral History, Military Coups & Regime Change, Music and The Sacred, Dinner & Theatre The Beaux’ Stratagem. Music, Pen, Nature and Food Celebrated in Calhoun

     A variety of activities will be hosted in Calhoun this March and April.  The Performing Arts Season Series at the Harris Arts Center welcomes Buddy O’Reilly Celtic Band on March 13, and the International String Band Festival featuring Little Country Giants on April 24.  Beginning writers will want to register for the Northwest Georgia Valley Writers’ Conference, also at the Harris Arts Center on March 20.  For information on these activities call 706-629-2599.  New Echota State Historic Site will host the Spring Bird Walk, Flower Hike & Star Party on April 17 from 10 am-2 pm.  This easy one-mile guided hike along New Town Creek Trail will introduce participants to bloodroot, violets, trillium, maple, spring warblers and a variety of other spring wildflowers and birds in their natural habitat.  Celebrate Earth Day on April 24 with the Oostanaula Odyssey Guided Paddle Trip.  Paddle 13 miles beginning at the opening of the new GA 156 Oostanaula Boat Ramp, to GA 140.  Call Dan McBee for info, 706-263-4002.  If the paddle seems like too much work you could also stick around Calhoun and eat!  More Than a Taste of Calhoun, sponsored by Mohawk Industries, also takes place on April 24.  Sample small-town living for the day with enticing food, live music, talented storytellers and handmade crafts.  To plan your Calhoun visit call 706-625-3200 or see http://www.ExploreGordonCounty.com.

Second Show Added for James Gregory at The Grand Theatre

Dates Added for Winter Wine Series at Barnsley Gardens Resort

Pretty Boy Floyd Lecture and Others Planned at Bartow History Museum

     History buffs make note of these fun and informative programs planned at the Bartow History Museum in March.  On March 17, the museum’s monthly Lunch & Learn will feature Joe Kirby to discuss his book Images of America: The Bell Bomber Plant.  The museum’s evening lecture program on March 25, features Father Phillip Scott detailing the life of Adairsville native Charles Arthur Floyd, also known as “Pretty Boy” Floyd.  For details see http://www.BartowHistoryMuseum.org.

Rome to Host Gem & Mineral Show and Waterfest

     The 32nd Annual Valley and Ridge Gem and Mineral Show will be hosted at The Forum in Rome on March 19-21.  The event takes place Friday-Saturday 10 am-6 pm and Sunday 11 am-5 pm. Admission is free.  Return to Rome in April 16-17 for Waterfest at Ridge Ferry Park.  This event include Kayak Tug-O-Wars, and Environmental Fair and Quiz Bowl, plus Asheville NC folk musician Billy Jonas in concert at the Rome City Auditorium.  The event benefits the Coosa River Basin Initiative.  To learn more about these and other great events hosted by Shorter College and Berry College see the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau website, http://www.romegeorgia.org – Where the rivers meet and the mountains begin…

New Antiques & Arts Festival in Adairsville April 17-18

     Adairsville, one of Georgia’s most historic cities, will host a new festival, Antiques & Arts in Adairsville, April 17-18, from 9 am-6 pm on the Historic Public Square.  Admission is free to the public.  An appraisal fair will also be included on Saturday with experts in jewelry, glassware, artwork, furniture and more.  A small fee per item reviewed will be charged.  Spaces remain for antiques dealers and artists.  Get an application online at http://www.AdairsvilleInApril.com.  The Cartersville-Bartow County Convention & Visitors Bureau is one of many sponsors for this event.  To plan your visit to Adairsville see http://www.NotAtlanta.org.  Adairsville is located half-way between Atlanta and Chattanooga on I-75 Exit 306. 

Plans Underway for Dixie Highway 90-mile Yard Sale

     Bargain hunters mark your calendars for June 4-6, 2010 and head to northwest Georgia for the annual Dixie Highway 90-mile Yard Sale.  The route follows the Old Dixie Highway which runs through the communities of Ringgold, Tunnel Hill, Dalton, Resaca, Calhoun, Adairsville, Cassville, Cartersville, Emerson, Acworth, Kennesaw and Marietta.  In past years hundreds of sales have been recorded from Acworth north to Chattanooga.  Dixie Dollar Coupons, which save you money on lodging and dining in the area will begin posting March 7, on the sale’s official website, http://www.DixieHighway.org.  Bookmark the site and return again often as Yard Sale Rental Space and additional coupons will continue posting through May.

Regional Meetings

     The next meeting of the Historic High Country Travel Association will be at 10:30 a.m. on the following Wednesdays:  March – No general meeting this month due to Winter Chautauqua.  April 14 – at Oak Hill & Martha Berry Museum in Rome.
     Winter Chautauqua will be hosted in Dillard on March 14-15.  This year’s is Banjos, Blue Jeans and Brain Power!  To register for this informative tourism conference see http://www.winterchautauqua.com.
