Golfing
legends have seen both triumphs and defeats in Georgia, but regardless
it is always a spirited game here in the High Country. Play a round at
each of the region's 45 courses nestled in unique mountain and lakeside
settings.
Some of the courses favored by local residents
include: Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, named to Golf Digest's list
of "America's Top
75 Affordable Courses"; Woodstock's Eagle Watch (an Arnold Palmer design),
Bradshaw Farm and Towne Lake Hills; Nob North in Dalton, an original
Gary Player course; just outside Ellijay is Whitepath, a tight, mountainous
course named for an Indian Chief; and Cedartown's Meadow Lakes. A local
golfer had this to say: "Average golfers will enjoy Fields Ferry in Calhoun
a long course with a mixture of open and tight fairways, and Cartersville's
Royal Oaks - golfers must be accurate on this tight course."
Two Fazio championship courses sweeten High Country
golfing vacations. In Adairsville, "The General" at Barnsley
Gardens Resort offers the designs of Jim Fazio and unspoiled mountain
views. In 2002, the Barnsley Gardens course was rated #13 "Overall
Best Golf Course" in Georgia by Golf Digest. The Georgian Resort
in Dallas features The Frog, a long course with generous fairways designed
by Tom Fazio."
