7. Appalachian Trail – A wilderness footpath over 2,100 miles along the crest of the Appalachian mountains, through fourteen states, Towns and Union counties, with it’s southern terminus at Springer Mountain on the Gilmer-Fannin border.More information on the Appalachian Trail
8. Ellijay Apples – Ellijay boasts the "Apple Capital of Georgia." Over 600,000 bushels of apples are produced annually and sold at 18 roadside stands throughout the county. Over 25 varieties are available. Call the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce for a brochure.
Annual Georgia Apple Festival & Arts and Crafts Fair – Apples and apple products of all kinds and a juried show of over 300 arts & crafts venders. Held 2nd and 3rd weekends in October.
Restaurants – There are a wide variety of dining pleasures to choose from: there is Colonel Poole’s BBQ, where you can immortalize your name on the fabled pig hill of fame; and how about Jimmy Carter’s favorite, The Pink Pig; or if not BBQ, try country cooking at its best and other ethnic styles available in this area.
Downtown Ellijay – Downtown Ellijay - "Scenic Mountain Community" where two rivers, Ellijay and Cartecay, flow together in the city limits to form the Coosawatee River, is the logo and the description of the City of Ellijay in Ellijay, Georgia.
Downtown Ellijay is revitalization in progress focused on viable economic development, historic preservation, improvement in appearance, and the provision of a safe walking environment for all visitors. The square has a round a-bout that is surrounded by historic buildings, antique, craft, and gift shops as well as a variety of eateries. Ellijay continues to grow and develop while serving as the county seat of government. A community atmosphere and a scenic beauty present themselves as an invitation to visit Ellijay, enjoy the atmosphere, and explore the opportunities.
River Park Complex – A picturesque recreation complex on the banks of the Coosawattee River, the park offers picnic areas, 4 tennis courts, a walking trail, several ball fields, and an Olympic-size swimming pool. A new soccer field is being constructed.
9. State Parks – Amicalola Falls State Park lies 25 minutes to the east of Ellijay on State Highway 52 and Fort Mountain State Park is 25 minutes to the west on State Highway 52.
10. Carters Lake – Carters Lake is the deepest man-made lake east of the Mississippi. It offers over 62 miles of uninhabited shoreline and a marina along with a resort. This Corps of Engineers lake offers sites for sight-seeing, hiking, picnicking, camping, swimming, boating, water skiing, and fishing. 706-334-2248.
11. Whitepath Golf Course – Named for the famous Cherokee Chief - this challenging mountainous 18-hole golf course is open to the public.
Mountain Rivers & Creeks – "Ellijay" is an Indian word meaning "Many Waters" or "Land of Green." Ellijay and Gilmer County offers several miles of riverbanks and creekbanks. The Cartecay River, The Ellijay River, The Coosawattee River, Turniptown Creek, and Mountaintown Creek offers the scenic beauty of canoeing, kayaking, floating, or fishing in their sparkling waters. President Jimmy Carter has written a book about "Turniptown Creek" and its fly-fishing.
12. Wilderness Areas – Both Rich Mountain Wilderness Area and the Chattahoochee Wilderness Area offer thousands of acres of numerous hiking and biking trails within the forest as well as camping and hunting sites.
